Josep Carreras Research Instutite
The Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) is a non-profit biomedical research institute founded in 2010 with the mission to conduct research and drive innovation in the epidemiological, preventive, clinical, translational, and basic aspects of leukaemia and other malignant blood diseases, with the final aim of finding a cure for these diseases.
IJC is a comprehensive cancer research center within the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya) network of Research Centres of Excellence (CERCA) and has been accredited since 2018 by the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (Asociación Española contra el Cáncer, AEEC). The IJC is also a constituent center of the Accredited Health Research Institute (IIS) recognized by the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII). Notably, the Insitute was also accredited in 2024 as Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
In addition to its main headquarters, integrated into the Can Ruti Biomedical Campus, the IJC operates across six sites within leading hospitals: Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, Hospital Clínic, Hospital Sant Pau, Hospital del Mar, Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, and Hospital Trueta. This apporach facilitates close collaboration between basic and clinical researchers, fostering translational research that bridges fundamental science with clinical practice in hospital environments.
The IJC’s scientific and technical services comprise nine specialized units offering a broad range of scientific services and state-of-the-art equipment. These units include Single Cell, Proteomics, Bioinformatics, Microarrays, Genomics, Cytometry, Cytogenetics, Cell Immortalization, and the Sample Handling Circuit.
